Invasive species meeting details

Last Wilderness Conservation Association invites you
to:

Invasives Among Us!
A Program on Terrestrial Invasive Species
Presque Isle Community Center
Wednesday, August 16 at 7pm

Vilas County has been a leader in the fight against
Aquatic Invasive Species as evidenced by Crusader
Invader Award. Now we need to work in another area.

Terrestrial invasives have been transported to our
area. One example, garlic mustard (Alliaria
petiolata), was recently discovered in Presque Isle.
Garlic mustard is rapidly spreading woodland biennial
weed that can displace most native plants within ten
years and is a major threat to the survival of
Wisconsin's woodlands. Seeds remain in the soil for up
to ten years, requiring yearly control efforts.
Helping with the Presque Isle garlic mustard
identification and control are botanists from the
Ottawa and Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forests, the
Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Council, the
Wisconsin DNR, Manitowish Waters Aquatic Invasive
Coordinator, the town of Presque Isle and a group from
Presque Isle representing many other organizations
called “Weed Warriors”.

Since cooperation has been key to the identification
and control of the Presque Isle garlic mustard
infestation, the program will also look at a concept
called Cooperative Weed Management (CWMA), the
integration of plant management resources across
jurisdictional boundaries and open many funding
possibilities.
